The End of Stress: Four Steps to Rewire Your Brain

Bonus: The Mirror Neuron–Empathy Test Drive

You can directly experience how mirror neurons generate empathy in you by watching the Empathy Video. This video presents a slide show that screens a number of photographs, one at a time. The images are of people’s faces expressing the basic range of human emotions, from fear to happiness. Each photograph remains on screen for ten seconds before transitioning to the next one. Your task is to look at the face and sense the emotion the face is expressing. Allow yourself to feel the emotion on that face. See if you can enter that person’s experience completely, as if it were your own experience. Be sensitive to your visceral responses, such as the sensation of your heart opening, the stirring of gut feelings, emotional contagion, and the state of your brain. As you read each face, don’t analyze the expression. Just look at the face and wait for a feeling to come up in you. There is an old Zen saying that goes: No need to figure anything out when you can feel your way through it. If at any point during the slide show your mind wanders off, gently bring it back to the task.

You are likely to be surprised by how much empathy you are capable of feeling for another human being. So, right now, watch the Empathy Video.
