Matthew Smith was born in Detroit Michigan in 1969. He moved to Hawaii in 1981 and in 1993 he graduated from the University of Hawaii with a bachelor’s degree in fine art majoring in painting.

Matthew has been creating for a long as he can remember. His surroundings inspire him and his palette reflects the colors he sees. “The light in Hawaii is so vibrant, the colors I see everyday literally glow with life. That along with my love of painting drive my creativity.”

His themes are varied but the common thread throughout his work would be that of peace. Matthew paints inviting images that calm the racing mind, it is his goal to engage the viewer. He explains; “If my work can draw someone in and they can get lost in the piece and forget, even for an instant, I have helped create a moment of peace. That is my aim.”

Smith has traveled the world and if his journeys have taught him one thing it is: “People want peace, peace for their children, for their families and for their countries. My work is a crystallization of this simple yet lofty concept.”
