Business is Becoming Conscious Right Underneath our Feet

The dawn of conscious business is among us, and there is a global shift happening as we speak.

The good news is this: as part of the current global shift toward “whole-world” and “world-centric” visions of a world culture that “would work for all” (this is the phase in the United Nations community where 193 nations have signed onto 17 categories of Sustainable Development Goals for world change), none of us have to look far for answers into whether the consciousness has a role in today’s business culture. The changes are taking place right under our feet—and all across the globe.

In 2016, we saw the birth of a global Conscious Business Declaration that was embraced across a rapidly growing community. In this declaration is where we can begin to find those much-needed tips toward how business can become more conscious. 

It’s a Truth that “if you change the story, you change the world.” The elements of the Conscious Business Declaration are exactly the shifts in awareness that can bring conscious change to global business and economics.

The Conscious Business Declaration: A New Standard 

for Business in the 21st Century

As a global community of business leaders, we are committed to developing the awareness and skills needed to evolve our organizations consciously in alignment with the following principles:

1. We Are One with humanity and all of life. Business and all institutions of the human community are integral parts of a single reality—interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent.
2. In line with this reality, the purpose of business is to increase economic prosperity while contributing to a healthy environment and improving human well-being.
3. Business must go beyond sustainability and the philosophy of “do no harm” to restoring the self-renewing integrity of the Earth.
4. Business must operate with economic, social, and ecological transparency.
5. Business must behave as a positive and proactive member of the local and global communities in which it operates.
6. Business that sees, honors, and celebrates the essential interconnected nature of all human beings and all life maximizes human potential and helps create a world that works for all.
7. When aligned with Oneness, Business is the most powerful engine on Earth for creating prosperity and flourishing for all.

The Conscious Business Declaration articulates essential principles that we believe will dramatically increase economic prosperity while healing the environment and improving human well-being. The Declaration aims to define a new standard for Business in the 21st century, one that will enable Business to become the most powerful engine on Earth for creating abundance and flourishing for humanity and all life on Earth.

The Declaration calls for radical shift in perspective for Business globally, one that is already shared by humanity’s leading spiritual traditions and validated by modern science. It is expressed in the first principle of the Declaration: “We Are One with humanity and all of life. Business and all institutions of the human community are integral parts of a single reality—interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent.”

But, a word of caution. Even if the vision is there, there is difficult work to be done. Even if humanity is “wired” ethically, morally, and spirituality for directions of change that could create “a world that works for all,” it will not happen without great effort.

The vision must be socially constructed—by all of us. We cannot just “dream it;” we must “do it.” We are a species embedded with millennia of selfishness, exploitation, competition, conflict, and war. Only in the last centuries, as a global civilization has emerged, has this demand on us—Our Moment of Choice—been foisted upon us, as a matter of our very survival. We face the challenge now to survive and thrive.

The good news is this: the shift to conscious business and economics is already happening right under our feet. To keep the momentum going, we just need to join the movement.
